When James Cameron launched his passion project Titanic in 1997, Hollywood braced for disaster - it was already legendary for it's wildly expensive production, and they thought they had a classic tale of hubris on their hands, believing it would not just bomb, but that it would be the end of Cameron's career.  Instead it was a bona-fide phenomenon, its box office became bigger than any film in history, holding the title until Cameron's own Avatar in 2009.
